The Rev. Tammy L. Estep, Superintendent of the Eastern Shore District

The district superintendent is an ordained minister appointed by the bishop to oversee the pastors and local churches in the district.  The superintendent carries out a wide range of responsibilities for the local churches in the district and throughout the Conference.  Responsibilities include overseeing the work of the local churches, presiding at Charge Conferences and supervising the work of the pastors.  The superintendent assists the bishop in making appointments of pastors to churches in the district.

The Rev. Tammy Estep has served as District Superintendent since July 1, 2006.  She is no stranger to the Shore, having served as pastor of Epworth United Methodist Church in Exmore for 11 years previous to her appointment.  Tammy says, “Being a United Methodist pastor and the child of an Air Force officer, I have moved around all my life. Living here on the Eastern Shore is home for me, as much as a place can be home for a UMC pastor. So I look forward to answering the call to serve our God in the midst of the people who have become home for me. I know the people of the Eastern Shore to be a people of great faith, of warm Christian hospitality, and of a deep desire to be faithful in their relationship with God, with each other and with their brothers and sisters across the bay and throughout the world. I am grateful for all that God has done in and through us over the past and I can’t wait to see what God will do in and through us in the years to come!”

Tammy has served four Virginia Conference churches since her ordination in June 1984. She was also innkeeper at the Samaritan Inns of the Church of the Saviour in Washington, D.C., where she supervised street women recovering from drug and alcohol abuse. She received a bachelor of science degree from James Madison University and master of divinity from Vanderbilt Divinity School. Among her service beyond the local church, Tammy has been a member of the conference Board of Church and Society, Board of Higher Education, served on the Administrative Review Committee, District Committee of Ordained Ministry, has taught at the Licensing School for Local Pastors, and is a well-known retreat leader and keynote speaker.

Tammy is married to E. “David” Outten, owner of The Herbert Senn Company in Exmore. David is an active member of Craddockville UMC. Tammy has two stepchildren and two grandchildren.
