E.S. District Collects Health Kits for Haiti

Eastern Shore Congregations,

Due to the winter storm forecast for Friday night and Saturday, the drop-off sites for the health kits have graciously volunteered to open their doors and receive health kits these days as well as Saturday.
·         Onley UMC will be open Thursday, Jan. 28 and Friday, Jan. 29 from 10 am -12 noon
·         Franktown UMC will be open Friday, Jan. 29 for 9 am – 11 am

Because the volunteers will not be available on Thursday and Friday, the only way they will be received is:
·         If the kits are boxed and marked Health Kits and how many
·         Money for toothpaste and shipping is in an envelope and designated amount for toothpaste and shipping
·         A form will be available for you to complete

The Conference Disaster Response Coordinator, Bob Philcrantz has announced that local churches will have until Saturday, Jan. 30 to get their health kits to their district drop-off sites; where they will be picked up from someone on our district and taken to a nearby regional site that same day.

The Eastern Shore District UMC drop off sites and times are as follows:

·         Onley UMC, 25642 E. Main Street, Onley –Drop-off is Sat., Jan. 30 from 9 am until 12 N

·         Franktown UMC, 7551 Bayside Road, Franktown –Drop-off  is Sat., Jan. 30 from 9 am until 12 N

Here is the Health Kit items and information:
The kits, valued at about $12 per kit, contain everything from towels and washcloths to sterile bandages and bar soap. They will be distributed to those who have been forced to leave their homes as a result of the recent disaster.
For individuals or groups that want to contribute basic necessities, UMCOR requests that the following NEW items be placed in a sealed one-gallon plastic bag.
  • 1 hand towel (15” x 25” up to 17” x 27”. No kitchen towels.
  • 1 washcloth
  • 1 comb (large and sturdy, not pocket-sized)
  • 1 nail file or fingernail clippers (no emery boards or toenail clippers)
  • 1 bath-size bar of soap (3 oz. and up)
  • 1 toothbrush (single brushes only in original wrapper, no child-size brushes)
  • 6 adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages
Instead of enclosing toothpaste in your health kit, UMCOR is asking you to provide $1 per kit so they can purchase it in bulk to ensure that the product does not expire before it's sent.  UMCOR is also asking for $1 for shipping costs for each kit, which enables the kits to be sent without delay to Haiti.  The money for these items should be one check from the church made payable to UMCOR and placed in an envelope -indicating the amount for Shipping Costs and the amount for Health Kits.

  • When you bring the kits to the District drop-off location:
    • Kits should be packed in boxes (weighing no more than 66 lbs. per box).  Include a label/or write on each box: “Health Kits” and number of kits in the box.  If you need boxes the Herbert Senn Co. in Exmore has some.
    •
    • The money for the toothpaste ($1 each kit) and the money for the shipping ($1 each kit) should be one check from the church in an envelope made payable to UMCOR.  On the front of the envelope state $_______ for toothpaste; and $_______for shipping costs.  Give the envelope to the volunteer at the Drop-Off site.

IMPORTANT:  We need volunteers to help load the boxes on the truck at Onley Church on Saturday.  Please contact Karen or Chuck Parks at watermaniii@verizon.net or call them at 757-787-3150”
