“We arrived safe and sound last night without any problems.  We worshipped in the Atlanta Airport in the chapel with a young Muslim woman who did her prayers with ours!  South Africa looks alot like the USA from the sky!  We landed in Johannesburg with a rep. from our hotel to pick us up.  We are staying in the Airport lodge...a comfortable place with a cool breeze.  We had dinner (grilled chicken, rice, gravy, carrots and orange juice) and then worship.  Kemp led us in our worship time on mission and then we headed to bed.  Breakfast this morning was eggs and bacon and beans (David was happy). Since we can't get a flight to Mozambique until Wednesday, we spent today touring Soweto.  Soweto stands for the southwestern township of Johannesburg.  We saw Nelson Mandela's home and Bishop Tutu's home blocks from each other.  The only street in the world housing 2 nobel peace winners.  We saw amazing poverty.  We toured the Hector Pietersen Museum.  Hector was a 13 year old who was the first shot in the student uprising in 1976 of elementary students protesting the use of the Afrikan language (of the colonist white dutch) in their schools.  There were 1500 elementary school students who protested and 600 were killed.  A sad part of our world history.  We will have dinner tonight and worship.  Tomorrow we fly out to Mozambique...no flights out on Tuesday and we missed our Monday flight due to the change of schedules due to the snow.  We will begin our teaching tomorrow afternoon as soon as we arrive.  We appreciate the prayers and continued care from you all!  Will email again when we have a chance!”

Per phone call for District Superintendent Tammy Estep:  They arrived in Mozambique around 8 am this morning (our time) and have left their luggage at the place they’ll be staying.  They’re traveling via passenger van to Cambine where they will begin teaching tonight.  They will send another email as soon as they can.

We’ve had a good day of teaching. David, Betsy and Kemp went to work at the Cambine Mission Center and ended up touring the Orphanage --devastating situation there but it was a powerful experience for them. There were 40 students of laity, clergy, UMM, UMW who participated in the conference today. It was a wonderful, delightful time of sharing. Temperature was 90 degrees today. It rained (poured) last night and we lost electricity last night and today until 5 PM. We had goat for supper. Everyone is doing well. We have one more day here (Cambine Seminary), then we will be traveling to Maputo where we will meet with the Bishop and others. We will all be in different churches on Sunday.”
