2016 Fall Tutoring Program
Our current volunteer sites are: Onley UMC (Onley), St. James Episcopal Church (Accomac), St. George Episcopal Church (Pungoteague), Guilford UMC (Bloxom), Market Street UMC (Onancock).
We have 80 children currently enrolled, and several inquiries to be followed up on. Over 50 volunteers attended one of two orientation/ training sessions in August and September.
October we had our first 6th grade gathering at the Market Street UMC site with twelve in attendance, and at least three more to be registered. They had a time of discerning their music interests with Michael, a time of listening play with Connie, and then a time of learning to make paper (photo), reading poetry and card stamping with Edith, Beth and Marva. The response from the students was wonderful - they definitely want to continue! And what a blessing!
Grace upon grace, and blessing upon blessing as we begin a new school year!
Anyone can be a tutor. It's not too late to sign up! You don’t have to be a teacher or have any special skills. If you can read, if you care about helping others, if you can commit to a few hours per week or whenever you can during the school year — you can be a tutor.
Una Familia (One Family)
"Una Familia" (One Family) is an Eastern Shore District ministry seeking to meet the needs of and be in relationship with the growing migrant and immigrant Hispanic/Latino community on the Shore.
Quietly, a ministry that began at Melfa United Methodist Church has begun growing into a movement. The tutoring ministry is an outreach primarily to Latino/a children in our neighborhoods at 4 different sites: Guilford UMC, Onley UMC, St. James Episcopal Church and St. George’s Episcopal Church. Each week during the school year, school buses from local elementary schools drop off children for learning, play, and snacks. Along the way they build relationships with church volunteers and remind us of the joy and the potential that God brings us through children.
During the summer, as well as being present in the neighborhoods, Una Familia ministers to residents of the migrant camps, providing health kits, hats, toiletries to the workers and engaging in activities with the children and families. Children have the opportunity to experience camp at our Occohannock on the Bay Camp and Retreat Center and take field trips to the zoo, etc.
Una Familia has begun a youth/young adult ministry to assist high school and college students in discernment and preparation for their vocational pursuits.
Volunteers enable this ministry in a variety of ways: tutoring, snack preparation, transportation, games, crafts, reading, etc. More volunteers will allow us to continue growing! There are many more needs and ways of being in relationship with our neighbors. If you or your church would like to participate in this growing ministry through gifts of time, money, or needed items, please use the contact information below.
