Imagine No Malaria
Pastors and laity at the 2014 Virginia Annual Conference voted to support The United Methodist Church’s Imagine No Malaria initiative (IMN). The goal of the Conference was to raise enough money in the next year to save at least 100,000 lives. Every church and every United Methodist in the Virginia Conference are urged to take part. Theme is "Every Life Save a Life."
Our Eastern Shore District set a goal in the fall of 2014 to raise $10,000 in one year for IMN. Through offerings and fundraisers our churches met that goal in January 2015. So what was the plan after we met our goal? We set another goal of $20,000 and we asked, "Whose up for saving more lives?". Our churches once again accepted the challenge and by June 2015 the Eastern Shore District met that goal and more! As of July 18, 2015, the Conference Office reported that the Eastern Shore District has raised $26,086.24 and saved 2,609 lives! Our district’s average weekly worship is 2,554 – so we really did save a life for every Methodist worshiping on the Shore. There were 29 churches involved, raising money through lemonade stands, Mother’s Day gifts, hot dog sales, coffee houses and lots of other activities. Way to go!
As of Sept. 30, Virginia Conference churches had raised $1,005,364.30 for Imagine No Malaria, saving more than 100,536 lives and exceeding the conference goal of raising $1 million to save 100,000+ lives from malaria, a preventable and treatable disease.
"This is a great day," said Bishop Young Jin Cho when he received the news from Maria Maxwell, Imagine No Malaria field coordinator for the Virginia Conference. "Thank God for all the churches," Cho said, "from the little children to all the others who joined this effort."
If your church has not participated and would like to, there is still time. Maria Maxwell, the Conference Imagine No Malaria Coordinator estimates that if each church who has not yet participated was able to send in $150, the Conference would meet the goal of saving 100,000 lives. And of course, if your church has participated but wants to continue to help, that would also be appreciated!
I am so proud to be part of the United Methodist Church. Our connectional system makes a real difference in the lives of people around the world. And I am extremely proud to be a member of the Eastern Shore District. Thank you again for your service and generosity.
